An update of the American Heart Association and American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation 2007 document –  defining the core components of cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention programs and now including programme quality as a new core component.  Recognising the need for expansion of CR delivery through  new care models, including virtual and remote delivery  being clear that all programmes regardless of location or method of delivery must include all core components  to be described as Cardiac Rehabilitation.

In this scientific statement, the scientific basis of the core components is updated – these components are  patient assessment, nutritional counselling, weight management and body composition, cardiovascular disease and risk factor management, psychosocial management, aerobic exercise training,strength training, and physical activity counselling. In addition, in recognition that high-quality cardiac rehabilitation programmes regularly monitor their processes and outcomes and engage in an ongoing process of quality improvement.
